EWU Eagles Hoops defeat Utah Valley Wolverines 75-50

The Eagles improved to 2-0 (0-0) last night with a dominant victory over Utah Valley.  Eastern opened the game on a 12-2 run on 2pt buckets by Venky Jois, Drew Brandon, and "OG" Miljkovic, who added a pair of three pointers in the run as well.  The Wolverines briefly cut the lead to 8pts late in the first half, but were never closer throughout.  Read more after the page break.

In their first game, the Eagles played a very poor first half both offensively and defensively before they put it all together in the second.  Last night they played a disciplined and consistent game throughout.  Their offense wasn't rushed, their defense stayed home.  They shot 53.3% from the field in the first half and held Utah Valley to 37%.  In the second half they improved to 56% and held the Wolverines to 33%.

Coach Hayford's team was oppressive on defense, holding UVU to just .82 points per possession while the Eagles managed a steady 1.21 points per possession.

Utah Valley isn't an offensive powerhouse and may not be a great team this season at all, but for the second time in a row the Eagles played their game to their own talent level and did not come down to the level of their opponents.

Individually, EWU got big time performances from their big time players.  Venky Jois finished with 13 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks.  Tyler Harvey took his turn leading all scorers with 18 points and added 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals with zero turnovers and zero personal fouls.  "OG" Miljkovic was limited to 23 minutes because of foul trouble, but still finished with 16 points off 4 of 6 from beyond the arc and added 2 rebounds 2 blocks and an assist .  Drew Brandon again showed he is a nightly triple-double threat finishing with 10 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 block.  He was so consistently around the rim he deserved about 10 more rebounds and only the patience of his teammates in passing off to more open looks prevented him from getting more assists.

Parker Kelly added 9 points 4 rebounds and 1 block.  He and Venky Jois combined to hit 4 of 5 from the free throw line.  Junior transfer Kyle Reid got his first 2 points as an Eagle and added 2 blocks, 1 steal and a rebound in 13 minutes.  Bogdan Bliznyuk was impressive on both ends of the floor in his 10 minutes getting 2 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 block.  Daniel Hill flashed his quickness and scored 2 points in very limited action.  Sir Washington hit another 3pt shot in his 3 minutes to round out the scoring for Eastern.

Up next for the Eagles a home match up against Walla Walla University on Wednesday, tip off is at 6:05 p.m. PT
